If you try to deny and suppress the way you feel about the world, it can actually damage you. Fromm talked about how biophilia—a love of life—is a biologically normal principle, but that necrophilia—a love of death or destructiveness—grows as an alternative to biophilia, when biophilia is repressed. And of course ignoring the impulses to live your own life also makes you just plain miserable.
